Today is a happy day for me, because I get to share with you all the beautiful cover Sarah Hansen (Okay Creations) designed for my new book, The Reason I Stay. I can’t tell you enough how in love I am with this cover. For the past 3 months it’s been my laptop’s wallpaper and every time I look at it I go: “Awww…. It’s so pretty!” LOL. =)
Designing this cover was a lot different from designing Exception’s. When Sarah started working on Exception’s cover the book was mostly written, which meant I had all this scenes and little things from the book that I wanted to incorporate into the cover. I ended up sending a list with about five scenes, a million character descriptions and comments like: “Taylor kisses Emily’s nose a lot” ,“A famous photographer takes a significant picture of them”, etc.
Now, a year later and with a little more experience in the whole book publishing thing, I have no idea how I expected Sarah to incorporate 500 pages into one single cover. LOL. But the woman works miracles and somehow, she managed to take all my jumbled mess and create a cover that had the feel of the book. It’s romantic, melancholic, emotional and most importantly shows a couple that even in extreme situations has each other’s backs. In short, it’s perfect for the book.
But The Reason I Stay was a whole different thing . . .
When it came time to design the cover for The Reason I Stay, I only had the idea of the book, the title and a couple of chapters written. So, my email to Sarah had only the most basic descriptions of my characters, two (short) paragraphs worth of story insight and these two sentences: You have complete creative freedom. Design the cover you always wanted to design. (I added a smiley after that. =) )
And Sarah did.
During the span of a week she sent me photo after photo that had something to do with the information I provided, but neither of us was getting really excited about them. And then one morning I opened my email and waiting for me was a message from Sarah. She sent a link and the words “I’m obsessed with this one.”
To be honest, I had decided that if she was obsessed I was going to say yes to that photo no matter what. But then I opened the link and died (figuratively, of course). That girl was Lexie, I had no doubt about it. So I wrote a big YES back to Sarah and two days later she sent me this beauty:
My breath was knocked out of me when I saw it. Not only the girl was Lexie, but, like it happened with Exception, the cover was the perfect representation of the book. All the elements that are crucial to the story are there. It’s sexy, complex in its simplicity, light and romantic. It was instant love! ❤
So that’s TRIS’s cover story. =) The rest of it, I’ll tell you August 27th, after you meet Matt and Lexie (whom I’m beyond excited to introduce to you!).
